In our project this week, we will be covering the vices in New Orleans including drinking, gambling, prostitution, drugs, violence, and power corruption. While we cannot cover each of these topics in great detail, we will provide examples of these vices “then” and “now,” colonial times and current times. We will compare the two eras and show how they have changed and developed in the city of New Orleans through time.
Because New Orleans is a swamp land with humidity and creatures, the city was not an ideal place for colonists to live. Therefore, unwanted people, such as prostitutes and convicts were rounded up to live there, thus making it the sin city it was said to have been. The sinners that lived there attracted more sinners and the city grew. New Orleans had a reputation for lax laws and ineffective law enforcement officers. This made New Orleans a breeding ground for illegal activity and the reputation of the city got worse.
It is important to understand the vices of New Orleans to fully understand the rich cultures and diversity we have here today. Our goal is to show how the different vices in New Orleans developed overtime and the role they play in New Orleans today.
Hopefully you will tell us how many there are but looking forward to the presentation!!
ReplyDeleteIm interested to see if the project talks a lot about prostitution and women, because i actually think that the men play an important role, which is that they are the main reason prostitution stayed around; if it wasn't for the men that kept paying them and promoting it, women would have eventually stopped. It's not just the women that should be blamed for that aspect of crime, but essentially the men.

ReplyDeleteThis was a great an interesting project. There are so many bases to touch just because New Orleans is a city FULL of vice and corruption.
